Background

Prettyboy D-O blessed us with his sophomore project titled “Wildfire” last month. This being his second drop came with the same unique style we observed from his debut album “Everything Pretty”. On this 8-track project, Prettyboy showcases the extra vim and infectious energy that sets him apart from his Alte genre peers in more ways than one.

The Album

This is a multidimensional project in terms of variety, delivery, and features. It definitely caters to every music lover’s tastes as there is a song for every mood. In an Insta live video between D-O and Odunsi (TheEngine), D-O announces that “Wildfire” is a spiritual anthem for all of his enemies to die by Wildfire.

Prettyboy uses the project to take us on a little journey; from wanting to be in the midst of armed robbers sipping on Bullet & Orijin in an incomplete building, to going to 57 to link up with the gang and catch some mindblowing whines, then ending the journey being loved up and cuddled in bed with your crush. So please get your cutlass, Orijin, and red/black bandana and let’s rage!

D-O combines his aggression, unique talent, and diversity to amazing use and the final outcome gives us “Wildfire” - an 8 track project that features four other amazing artistes; Tim Lyre, WANI, Solana, and Olamide.

Review

For the sake of conciseness, I will only be focusing on and reviewing 4 songs off the album featured on the Culbans Sounds Playlist (links below).

The album starts off with “Waka” (produced by Higo) which draws us in with the sound of fire burning (cue Wildfire). Waka is a slang commonly used in Nigeria that is a variant of “fuck you”. After the crackling fire sounds, D-O goes straight in to deliver his bars about how far he has come in the industry irrespective of naysayers on Higo’s uptempo beat. The song is specifically dedicated to ALL of D-O’s haters and non-believers. Y’all have clearly pissed him off!

After “Odeshi” (produced by DaRe), D-O drastically switches up the vibe of the album with “Mentally” (produced by Adey) which contains a mind-blowing collaboration with WANI. D-O goes from rapping about his haters in the previous songs to exciting rhymes and singing about a crush on Mentally. The song sets the perfect seduction tone for the album. D-O sings about doing everything to please said crush because he’s had his eyes on her from time. WANI smoothly enters with a short but catchy verse with his heart on his sleeve and literally just puts the icing on the cake for this jam. They both blend perfectly on Adey’s pulsy beat. My personal favourite off the album.

After “Same Energy” (produced by DaRe), “Bulala” (produced by PrinceBoom and AYLØ) featuring Solana gives us the same seductive tone we got previously from “Mentally” but with a racier vibe this time. D-O basically uses “bulala” as slang on the song to tell us his pipe game is A1 and babes just can’t get enough. This song is particularly special because it features the only female act on the album. Solana brings the feminine touch this song needs. Her voice perfects the song because we hear a catchy and sweet counter to D-O’s voice. The blend between the beat and verses of the artistes set the tone of an intense moment of whines. The song switches beats and tempo after 3 minutes to an irate PrettyBoy, who talks about how the industry is rugged & how far he has come once again 🙃.

Up next we have “Wetin You Smoke” (produced by Telz) featuring the one & only Olamide Baddo. The song starts off with D-O hailing Olamide which is only right. Olamide delivers as usual with a catchy hook and some Yoruba bars while D-O still takes control of his song and retains the limelight with his own bars and captivating rhymes. These two fuse their contagious energies and the outcome is a catchy and fun delivery on Telz’s melodious beat.

Overall, the Wildfire project portrays a versatile Prettyboy D-O who knows his worth and is hell-bent on proving himself in the industry. From his debut album “Everything Pretty” to his sophomore album “Wildfire”, D-O has proved that he does not need to change his style or sound to please the crowd. He knows where his talent lies and uses his contagious energy to sell himself.

The other four unreviewed songs on the album are definitely gems and I implore you to give the full album (linked below) a listen.
